This week was a huge honor for me. I FINALLY got to interview a sista I’ve admired for YEARS, queen Sheeba Maya, a very well respected, African spirituality and afrofuturism artist! Although she is not an author nor does comic work, Sheeba has been lovingly connected to the black comic book world for quite a few years now, simply because of the quality of her artwork and the elevated level of her energy.
Her works have recently been included in John Jennings and Reynaldo Anderson’s huge exhibit at the Schomburg Center, UNVEILING VISIONS. She is also an official artist for #MECCACON2016!

Sheeba Maya is an illustrator and portrait artist who specializes in realism with a nod towards fantasy. Her personal work has grown out of an interest in African mysticism, esoteric wisdom and extrasensory perception.
Her current body of work includes a series of zodiac illustrations. “This series is mainly created out of the desire to expand my work…my work in the past largely focused on the face and how it expresses the spirit. This year I became interested in the character of my subjects”, she explains.
“I was having visions of brown skinned goddesses who were born with usual ornaments growing out of their heads. I had dreams of myself communing with all sorts of animals, from elephants to fireflies.”
This series is also inspired by her love of nature, her fascination with organic patterns, and her adoration for couture fashion.
“These women are primordial goddesses…immortal…self created…they are like the mother of each sign…they are in a sense the reason and order for each sign…. all of their mysteries are held in the gleam of their eyes……when u look at any one of them, you can just tell that they *know*…”
