10:15 ORISHA’S JOURNEY, 5:20mins
In Orisha’s Journey, a short animated film based on African folklore by New York
City-based filmmaker of Ghanaian descent, Abdul Ndadi, Orisha dismisses a fairy tale her
grandfather tells her, opting instead for the real thing. She decides to embark on an
adventure of her own, encountering magical creatures, battling monsters, making friends
along the way, realizing that reality is sometimes stranger than fiction, and perhaps most
importantly learning the interconnectedness of nature and humanity.

10:25 E.X.O: THE LEGEND OF WALE WILLIAMS; 8:38mins;
The Legend of Wale Williams Part 1 is a science fiction superhero story about redemption,
set in a futuristic, 2025 Africa! The 136 page graphic novel follows the journey of Wale
Williams, an impetuous young adult who inherits a suit with super powers after his father
goes missing. Tricked into returning home to Lagoon City, Nigeria following a five year
absence, Wale embarks on a journey to investigate his father s mysterious disappearance.
As he comes to understand the suit s powers, Wale realizes he must restore hope to his city by preventing catastrophic attacks from the sociopathic, Oniku, leader of an extremist group called The CREED.

10:40 THE LAST DAYS OF KARTIKA, Wi-Moto Nkoya, 15mins
‘The Last Days of Kartika’ is a web series and a staged motion comic that also works as a
music video. It portrays an epic story about a modern day heroine, Dusky Diana. Sassy and
lean, naughty and mean, Diana is a new day saver. We are finally seeing the dawn of
narratives led by powerful, able and agile females. Wi-Moto Nyoka is the mastermind
behind Dusky Diana (the singer and the character) and Community Education is the band of performers. ‘The Last Days of Kartika‘ combines Funk, Soul, and Hip Hop music supporting her musical exploration and the intentions of the production are to ‘provide opportunities for upcoming artists, both local and international, to perform and collaborate with one another through this multi-media project.

11:00 BOMLAMBO: Those of the Water, Zwelesizwe Ntul; 24mins

From director Zwelesizwe Ntuli comes the story of a young Xhosa woman named Nobuntu, who has a prophetic dream. She finds a young boy named Siphelele, washed up on shore, and believes that he is a gift from the Abantu Bomlambo – which directly translated means, “the people of the river”, and who are essentially feared, respected and loved ancestral spirits, semi-deities that dwell in the water. Some believe that they take physical form, while others say they only visit in dreams, and others, that they are shape-shifting spirits.  The boy Nobuntu finds (Siphelele) is then put into a position in which he’s forced to fight for what is his new home, in order to feel some new sense of belonging.

1130 REVEILLE starring Skylan Brooks; Korstiaan Vandiver, 7mins

In 1935, Nazi Germany, an African American boy has to match wits with a Nazianz defector
turned vagabond; their encounter will change the course of both their lives forever.

11:40 UMPKHUNGO, Matthew Jankes; 30mins

Set in the slums of Hillbrow, an overpopulated urban area of inner city Johannesburg,
Umkhungo tells the story of Themba, a young boy shrouded since birth by paranormal
events; most say haunted by the ancestors. When his mother is murdered, and his father
dies in mysterious and unexplained circumstances; Themba is rescued by a disillusioned
street thug, Mthunzi. Fleeing deep into the city, Mthunzi finds himself responsible for this extraordinary young boy. Haunted by the past disappearance of his brother, Mthunzi finds himself drawn to the child, unable to abandon him. As the mystery surrounding the boy deepens, Themba suggests he may be able to use his remarkable gifts to help find
Mthunzi’s lost brother. The two embark on a journey of discovery as they try to locate Mthunzi’s brother. Yet, just as it seems Themba is coming to terms with his abilities, his uncle, from the homelands, arrives. This highly superstitious man wants to keep the boy shackled and hidden. Together, Mthunzi and Themba, an unlikely pairing, soon learn that Themba’s curse is in fact not a curse, it is a gift; a truly remarkable one – not the least a powerful one.

12:15 ONLY LIGHT, Evita Castine; 13mins;

The film tells what happens when a young girl is kidnapped from the Democratic Republic
of the Congo, and sold as a sex worker in the U.S., and who finds an escape from reality by
watching a teenage girl next door.

12:30 THE SUMMER OF GODS, Eliciana Nascimento; 20mins

The Summer of Gods is a short film about a troubled girl named Lili who unites with her
Afro-Brazilian religious ancestry on a summer visit with family to their ancestral village in rural Brazil. Soon after her arrival, she encounters Orishas (African gods) who join with her grandmother to help her find peace with a gift that has previously vexed her. The film is set in the Northeast of Brazil where Afro-Brazilian religious traditions remain strong. Lili’s grandma is a well revered local priestess who honors the Orishas. Lili is blessed by the goddesses as well. To preserve tradition, they lead her on a mystical adventure through a nearby forest which symbolizes her initiation into the tradition.

1:15 – 2:00 BLACK SPECULATIVE ARTS MOVEMENT (BSAM) Panel
2:15 – 3:00 WOMEN IN COMICS, INTERNATIONAL (WinC) Panel
3:15- 4:00 BACK 2 BLACK: ACCURACY vs ACCEPTANCE Panel

4:15 WOMAN OUTSIDE, Yolonda Ross; 20mins

The indifferent streets of downtown Los Angeles serve as backdrop for a tale of a mentally
unstable homeless woman, who, each day, takes up a bench in Grand Park to continue her
incoherent diatribe with City Hall across the street. One day, an affluently dressed business woman takes up the bench in front her. Recognizing this woman’s sadness as her own, the homeless woman finds an unexpected connection and with it, a chance at salvation. That night, the businesswoman aches in a disconnected marriage, while on the street, the homeless woman is attacked and her possessions, stolen. The next day, the homeless woman storms into the park to resume her protest again but her fury is diffused by the arrival of the businesswoman looking shattered. Desperate to be seen, desperate to be heard, the homeless woman follows her affluent counterpart down the street, onto a bus, where she tries, once again, to speak.

4:40 BLACK CARD, Tony Patrick/Pete Chatmon; 14mins
It would be just another day for Leonard… except The Commission, a shadow organization
tasked with keeping members up to snuff on their “blackness”, is hot on his trail for his
latest infraction. An afternoon with the love of his life, Lona, goes off course as a missing
ID card escalates into questions of loyalty, life, and love.
